Model-III demonstrator being built at Lycée Jean Perrin

The Lycee, a kind of a mix of senior high-school and junior college, features specialized professional electronics sections, hence the name of Jean Perrin, one of the leading French scientists of the first part of the twentieth century, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926 for his work on the discontinuity of matter.

After the WPT-01 workshop held in La Réunion in May 2001, a group of about 15 teachers of Lycée Jean Perrin, coordinated by the deputy head-master of the Lycée, has undertaken to prepare a major school project for the academic year 2002-2003, involving various disciplines, to organize students into a "school company" with the purpose to conceive third generation SPS portable system demonstrators, based on the existing model-2 design built in cooperation by ISAS and CNES in 1999.

Students in the mechanical section will redesign and build the structures and the carrying case. The students working in the electromechanical section will redesign and build the Sun simulator, the photovoltaic array and the Earth display. Those in the electronics section will redesign and build the power conditioning unit and also build the microwave section according to the design already developed at ISAS. The system will be tested with the help of the WPT research group of the University of La Réunion. In parallel, the French language teachers will help the students write up a set of directions for use of the model, as well as a set of related documents to present the principles of Wireless Power Transportation and the basics of Space Solar Power systems, while the English teachers will help them prepare the international version.

Students in the business sections of the Lycée will perform several tasks : they will make a world-wide market survey for the distribution of the models, they will investigate precisely the elements that will contribute to the formation of the price of the demonstrator, estimated between 2.000 and 3.000 USD from the first calculations, and eventually they will handle international sales.

A promotional FOB price of 2.000 USD has been already set for subscription customers, exclusive of delivery costs.

Journal de l'Ile de La Réunion - Article of 09 February 2002

Christian Poncelet (President of French Senate)

at lycée Jean Perrin in Saint-André

for the WPT / SSP demonstrator project

At the end of his three-day stay in our department of La Reunion, Christian Poncelet, the President of the French Senate, visited the Jean Perrin technical senior high-school in the town of Saint André.

The students gave him a presentation of their WPT/SSP project (Wireless Power Transportation and Space Solar Power). .

The President of the Senate was back in the classroom just the time for a lecture at technical senior high-school (1 079 students, 39 sections) in Saint André. Christian Poncelet listened to the students of one of the scientific sections as they explained him their major school project : WPT, i.e. Wireless Power Transportation. At the origin of this adventure, which began last November, you will find a Cnes Engineer, Guy Pignolet. The principle : to use electromagnetic waves to transport en energy from one point in space to another point. The system : one projection unit and one collection unit. The application : satellites orbiting around the Earth to convert solar energy into a beam of microwaves to transport, without danger, this energy to the Earth where fields of "rectennas" will reconvert the microwaves into electricity.

How does the Saint André technical school fit in this business ? It will manufacture and sell WPT/SSP demonstration attaché cases made by the students of the different sections (wood craftsmanship, mechanics, electrotechnics, electronics, physical sciences, geography, French…). The demonstrator includes models of the Sun, of a satellite and of the Earth. The goal of the Jean Perrin high school is to offer the model for sale to major science museums and to educational institutions worldwide. The Headmaster, Mrs. Trolèze, was happy that this undertaking will "federate both the students and the teachers. The goal is to prepare young citizens that will be aware and listening to the world around them".

Press Release

Sunsat Energy Council

- Paris, Thursday 21 March 2002 -

- Sunsat Energy Council meets with President of French Senate -

Christian Poncelet, the President of the French Senate, received a delegation of the Board of the Sunsat Energy Council, an international organization responsible for the promotion of future Space Solar Power systems.

The meeting, in which participated Bryan Erb, of Canada, the President of the Sunsat Energy Council, and other members of Sunsat from other countries around the world, follows a recent visit of President Poncelet in a French junior college where attaché case demonstrators are built to explain the operation of these future Space Solar Power systems. SSP will capture solar energy in orbit and convert it to electricity that will be sent to the surface of the Earth by microwave beams.

The President of the Senate made special notes of the need in the long term for new sources of energy, particularly in view of the growing world population. He also noted the importance of solar energy in the future and the promising prospects offered by Space Solar Power.

The President and the delegation discussed the challenges of this technological concept such as the transportation and conversion of energy, as well as the economic and industrial implications. The President of the French Senate concluded by emphasizing the importance of technology demonstrations.
